Acne - The Facts About Acne and Birth Control

By David M Siegel

Over the years, many women have started taking oral contraceptives not in an attempt to prevent pregnancy, but in an attempt to clear up acne. So, does birth control actually have any affect on acne?

In many cases it is true that oral contraceptives can clear up acne, but this isn't true in all cases. Choosing to use oral contraceptives is a decision that must be made carefully, because there is certain side affects associated with birth control pills. With that said, however, the FDA has even approved some brands of oral contraceptives, to be used in the treatment of acne.

So, how does it work? Acne is caused by excessive sebum, which is natural oil that is actually necessary to protect and moisturize the skin. When too much sebum is produced, the oil clogs the pores, causing acne. However, this is just one cause of acne, and the only cause that oral contraceptives have any bearing on.

In other words, if the acne is not caused by excess sebum, birth control pills won't do anything to help clear away the acne, or help to prevent it. Furthermore, oral contraceptives are not suitable for all women. If women are over the age of 35, smokers, have migraines often, or have high blood pressure; the chances are that the doctor will not prescribe oral contraceptives.

Typically birth control is only prescribed, for the treatment of acne, if all other treatments have been exhausted without any positive results. Even if your doctor does prescribe birth control for the treatment of acne, you need to realize that it is not an instant cure. It takes time for birth control pills to fully get into your system, and therefore, it takes time for them to clear the acne - if the acne is even caused by excess sebum.

If you feel that oral contraceptives may be the answer to your acne condition, be sure to talk to your doctor and your dermatologist to find out if they think that this is a suitable treatment for your acne.
